How to Unclog a Toilet

How to Unclog a Toilet

A clogged toilet is one of the most frustrating and common nuisances homeowners have to face. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to unclog a toilet. Granted, the best way to address a clogged toilet is with a thorough drain cleaning, there are some ways that homeowners – and business owners – can unclog a toilet on their own. The following methods will only cost a few bucks or require only some common household items. If you decide to get a nearby plumbers in Gilbert, then call Rooter Hero Plumbing of Phoenix. We are available around the clock to take your call.

Unclog Using A Plunger

Unclog that toilet by pulling out the plunger and put that elbow grease to work. If you do not have a plunger, then head to your local hardware store to purchase one. The idea behind using a plunger is simple but there is a technique to it:

How to Unclog a Toilet
  • Before you begin plunging, we recommend that you remove enough water out of the toilet bowl so that you don’t splash water on your floors during the process. Use a small bowl or bucket to gently scoop excess water.
  • Slowly lower the plunger into the toilet bowl and let out the air from inside the plunger.
  • Seal the opening of the toilet bowl snugly.
  • Plunge firmly using a steady, up-and-down motion to force the water against the blockage. Once the blockage has been pushed out, you should see the water level in the toilet bowl readjust to its normal level.
  • Gently pour a container of water into the toilet to make sure the water level goes down and the blockage is removed.

Unclog Using A Drain Snake or Coat Hanger

A drain snake is another common method of unclogging toilets. If your local hardware store does not have a drain snake, then grab a coat hanger and unravel it then wrap one end with a cloth and duct tape it firmly in place. Insert the drain snake or coat hanger into the trap way of the toilet bowl until you feel it push against the blockage. Gently push the debris down the drain and twist and push the device in a circular motion to clear out as much of the gunk as possible. If you cannot reach the debris with these tools, then use another method.

Unclog Using Household Cleaners

If you do not have access to the previous tools, then bring out some soap, shampoo, or slivers of bar soap. Remove any excess water in the toilet bowl, making room for at least a gallon of incoming water. Lubricate the toilet bowl with the soap. Heat a gallon of water but not to a boil. Boiling water can crack your toilet bowl. Pour the hot water into the toilet bowl and let it sit for about 20 minutes, then try flushing. If the toilet starts to overflow, then turn the water valve behind the toilet off.
